?Ultimate Guitar Lessons?
Takes Guitar Learning To A New Level
Learning to play the guitar is a lot like learning how to speak a new language ? the better instruction you receive, the easier it is to learn and apply.
That's why, I took time and effort to research and write Ultimate Guitar Lessons. I wanted to be sure that it contained everything you need to know to become the best guitar player you can be, and that it presents that information in a simple- to-read, easy-to-understand manner.
The ebook is designed to take you on a journey from beginner to intermediate and beyond by fast-tracking your guitar playing skills ? while covering every aspect involved in learning to play the guitar.
This is a terrific resource for guitarists or would-be guitarists who want to build a sound foundation to their playing, whatever style or styles of music you're into. Whether you want to play along with and impress your friends at a get-together, play solo, play lead and rhythm guitar in a professional or semi-professional band or compose guitar-oriented music then you need a comprehensive knowledge of guitar chords, scales, modes and arpeggios and picking and fingerpicking techniques so that, starting with good practice habits, you can build a lifetimes's progress in guitar.
Too many beginners try to learn a few guitar chords then give up because they keep seeing new and more difficult chords in tab or songsheets and don't understand the musical theory that lies behind chord construction or how and why particular chords are used in different musical contexts.
Or they may find that their progress is hampered by poor posture, inadequate picking technique or bad practice habits that make their attempts to play guitar a drudgery instead of the joy that it should be.
Many people will claim that you can become a proficient or even great guitarist without practicing. Use this method or that method as a shortcut to success and in no time at all you will be playing like Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen or whoever your favorite guitar player is.
Yeah, right.
I can assure you there is no substitute for practice. Without regular focused practice you will never achieve and maintain the dexterity necessary to perform at a consistently high level.
But not everyone who takes up the guitar wants to become a guitar virtuoso. Even if you do - don't be discouraged.
Regardless of whether you want to be an accomplished guitarist or merely strum along as an accompaniment to singing, Ultimate Guitar Lessons provides the necessary advice on playing and practicing appropriate to the required level.
Ultimate Guitar Lessons starts from first principles, assuming you, the reader, has little or no prior knowledge or experience of guitar playing and quickly, in a step-by-step manner, builds up your understanding of the guitar fretboard to a fairly advanced level. Starting from the basics of choosing the right guitar and accessories, the correct way to hold your guitar, and how to tune your guitar in a variety of different ways and situations, The Ultimate Guitar Lessons goes on to explain in a simple, clear and straightforward way the concept and use of musical intervals which underpins all musical theory and practice and reveals the theory and practice behind all the guitar chords and scales used in popular music.
The Uniqueness Of The Guitar
For a long time the teaching of guitar was hindered by using the layout of the piano keyboard to teach musical theory. The keys of a piano keyboard are set out in a non-duplicated, linear and sequential fashion, with the lowest notes in pitch at the left hand side moving to the highest notes at the right hand side. Whilst this is helpful in teaching that the white keys are the notes in the key of C and the black notes are sharps and flats it is not especially helpful in teaching guitar.
Many stringed instruments such as violins and violas are tuned in symmetrical intervals. Others, such as the traditional banjo, are tuned to produce a common chord, such as G major, when the unfretted strings are strummed. Standard guitar tuning is an unusual tuning for a stringed instrument since it is neither symmetrical nor chordal.
This unsymmetrical tuning makes the guitar a very pattern oriented instrument which is particularly optimized for four fretting fingers. The guitar fretboard is a matrix with duplicate notes meaning that in many cases the same note or chord can be played at different positions on the fretboard - potentially confusing for the beginner but allowing tremendous scope once a little knowledge is gained. The Ultimate Guitar Lessons provides that knowledge.
Guitar Chords
Whether you want to be a lead guitarist or rhythm player, you'll need a sound knowledge of guitar chords. What are chords? Chords are three or more notes played simultaneously as opposed to sequentially as in a melody or tune. Chords provide the harmonic backdrop or accompaniment to a melody which can be your own singing, another instrument soloing or even your own guitar melodies as in the voice leading approach to jazz guitar.
One of the most daunting aspects for a beginning guitarist or even intermediate guitarist is the bewildering number of chords that seem to exist. Just browsing through the many chord books available you'll come across titles like "10,000 Essential Guitar Chords". This can be very off-putting for the novice guitarist. What you have to realise is that a very large number of these chords are totally impractical because they either involve stretches that most normal humans could not contemplate or they sound so awful they would never be used in any musical situation.
The Ultimate Guitar Lessons takes a more down-to-earth approach to teaching chords. We begin with a very clear yet thorough explanation of musical intervals in particular the major and minor thirds which are the building blocks of harmony. We continue with a discussion of chord theory including the 3 basic types of chord: major, minor and dominant; chord formula - how chords are built up from the notes of the underlying musical scales; an explanation of the chord symbols you'll encounter; and a full discussion of chord terms such as triads (3 note chords), seventh chords, extended chords, and altered chords. Don't worry if these terms are unfamiliar to you or sound complicated, as Ultimate Guitar Lessons de-mystifies all the musical jargon and explains everything in straightforward language that anyone can understand.
Your chordal journey starts with the easiest guitar chords to play, known as open chords because they take advantage of open or unfretted strings. Combining these together will enable you to play simple arrangements of many popular songs. From there we move via slash chords, which have an alternate bass note, to all the different kinds of movable chord forms.
Movable chord forms enable you to significantly extend your chord vocabulary using just a limited number of fingering configurations. This is because the same chord shape, applied at different locations on the fretboard, produces different chords. We look at the most widely used movable chord forms, bar chords, so-called because the first finger is used to form a bar across several or all of the strings. We visit power chords, beloved of the hard rock and heavy metal community. Finally we examine the movable four note chord forms extensively used in jazz guitar. If you think these are purely jazz guitar chords you may be surprised that many of these crop up in many diverse musical genres including classical music, pop and rock.
The most important chord forms on the guitar are movable chords modelled on open chords, - chords featuring unfretted strings - which form the basis of a powerful learning tool known as the CAGED system.
The Ultimate Guitar Lessons reveals how the CAGED system charts the interlocking grid of chords and scales over the entire guitar fretboard and how this can be used to advance your knowledge of chords, related scales and arpeggios.
In fact there are exactly five guitar chord forms, based on the open C, open A, open G, open E, and open D chords - hence CAGED - arranged along the length of the fretboard to produce a juxtaposed sequence which form an interlocking reference grid for the guitarist. Not only do these provide a roadmap for scales and arpeggios but also provide an easy starting point to memorize all other chords which are built from these forms. Instead of having to constantly refer to huge guitar chord books to find a particular guitar chord, a knowledge of the CAGED system and chord construction formula, simply explained in the Ultimate Guitar Lessons, enables an easier way to permanently remember not just these chords but all major, minor and advanced chords.
Chord Progressions
Chord progressions are chords played in sequence to form the harmonic platform for parts of a song. We explain the concept of keys, what a key is, and how chords are built. Musically chords progress in a way that can be easily expressed as number values that apply equally to any key.
We explain that number system, often called the Nashville number sytem because of its common usage in the capital of country music, how the chords in any key are given a numerical value, how a progression can be specified using only a key and a number, how to recognise keys and how to transpose a given chord progression into any other key.
Find out why so many songs can be played using just 3 chords and which chords they are. Learn about the principles of tension and resolution in music and how to recognize cadences. We also show you some of the more common chord progressions that are the basis for thousands of well-known songs in popular music and jazz so you can recognise and play them.
Scales And Modes
Scales, in general, are often misunderstood as being mere technical exercises. This is a big mistake, however, as a scale is much more than that.
A scale is a precise collection of notes that sounds good played over a particular chord or chord progression. You can play the notes in almost any order and still sound "musical" and you can play them in particular sequences to create melodies and harmony lines.
Although scales, in and of themselves, are not melodies, they are the building blocks upon which the guitarist can expand his or her knowledge, playing ability and creativity.
Our examination of guitar scales begins with the most important scale in music theory, the scale that all others are derived from in Western music: the major scale.
The happy-sounding major scale, aka the "doh ray me fa soh lah te doh" from our early school days, is the most common scale in use today. It is present in every form of music in the West, including rock, pop, jazz, classical, and country music.
To explain what a scale really is, we explore the concept of musical intervals. An octave is a musical interval between two musical notes, one of which has twice the pitch of the other. Now an octave is divided into 12 equal intervals which form what is known as the chromatic scale. Each of these intervals is known, perhaps confusingly, as a half-step or semitone, and corresponds to the distance between two adjacent frets on the guitar fretboard.
Each of these 12 notes in the chromatic scale is the root or starting note of a major scale, each major scale comprising a fixed series of intervals of tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone and semitone from this starting note, and these intervals are exactly the same for each of the twelve major scales.
Thus the major scale, like all other scales, is essentially a template that places certain notes in a defined order with mathematical precision and results in a characteristic sound.
Now if we start on any one of the seven notes (the eighth is the octave) in the major scale, say the C major scale, and use only the notes of that major scale, over two octaves we can build up a series of seven, so-called, modes. The starting note defines the tonality of the mode and the stepwise pattern of tones and semitones defines the modality of the mode.
Thus if we take the C major scale, C D E F G A B C, and start on the note D, for example, we get D E F G A B C D which gives us the D Dorian mode with a stepwise pattern of tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone, tone.
The most familiar modes, which have rather confusing Greek sounding names, are those derived from the major scale. But in fact it's possible to build modes from other scales by applying the same principle.
The Ultimate Guitar Lessons takes a in-depth look at guitar scales revealing the scale formulae and uses fretboard diagrams to show alternative fingerings of the most important scales and modes including:
the major scale aka the ionian mode
the natural minor scale aka the aeolian mode
the major pentatonic scale
the minor pentatonic scale
the blues scale
the melodic minor scale
the harmonic minor scale
the whole tone scale
the half-whole diminished scale
the whole-half diminished scale
the dorian mode
the phyrgian mode
the lydian mode
the mixolydian mode
the locrian mode
Reading Guitar Music
Many guitar enthusiasts often become discouraged by their inability to understand the way guitar music is notated.
Today guitar music can be obtained from various sources and often comes in diverse forms - guitar tablature, chord diagrams and standard musical notation being the most common.
Guitar tablature, or tab, as it is commonly known is a way of representing guitar music using six horizontal lines to represent the guitar strings and numbers to represent the frets where the fingers should be positioned. At the moment, a lot of guitar material is freely available online in tab format and, although the accuracy of many of these guitar transcriptions is dubious, it can be a quick and inexpensive way to obtain reasonably close renderings of the chords and lead parts to some of your favorite songs.
The Ultimate Guitar Lessons shows you how to read tab easily. Not only do we show you how to decipher which notes on which strings to play but also the symbols for commonly used techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, string bending and harmonics. We also show you how to understand the chord diagrams and contemporary chord notation used in commercial sheet music.
Standard musical notation is the globally excepted language with which professional musicians and composers write down music. It has developed gradually over time into a stable system whereby the pitch of a particular note is displayed by its position on a set of lines known as the staff and the duration of the note is shown by its shape.
Because the tonality, timing and arrangement of musical pieces can be complex and varied, standard musical notation has evolved to cater for such complexities.
Whilst it is not necessary to be able to read music to be able to play guitar - and this is true even for many professional rock and blues guitarists - if you wish to become a session guitarist you must be able to sight read music i.e. be able to play in real time from a piece of written music.
Even if you have no ambition to become a studio musician, being able to read written music confers many advantages. It becomes possible to read and play music for guitar where no guitar tab is available. You could also read music written for other instruments, such as the saxophone, and transcribe these for guitar thus opening up the possibilities to play a wider variety of music.
The Ultimate Guitar Lessons explains standard musical notation in a simple straightforward manner that anyone can understand.
